The world famous Concours d’ Elegance in Pebble Beach California, saw the unveiling of the much anticipated 750 HP Mercedes Maybach 6 last week. The Maybach S600 sedan has sparked conversations and questions about potential competitors in its class, way beyond its debut at Monterey Car Week, on the Monterey Peninsula.

The Maybach is beautiful. There is no question about it and if you are a fan of classic cars, then this one will steal your heart with its long hood, low roofline and classic gull-wing doors. Coming in at 18.5 feet long, the Maybach is a luxurious package from front to read, and its manufacturers have likened aspects of its design to a luxury yacht.

The aerodynamic Maybach is as fast as it is beautiful and soon dispels any misgivings critics may have about its limitations as an electric car, with an astounding 550 KW, or 750 HP capabilities. Added to this, the shallow under-floor battery promises an impressive 200 miles. This vehicle is poetry in motion whether you are driving it or feasting your eyes on the vision as it sails past with its classic lines, split rear window and stunning partially transparent rims.

In a Press Release, Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG, said the Maybach is an expression of the company’s design philosophy of sensual purity and the pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency. Indeed, and this is verified by the interior as well. With high-quality leather trim and rose-gold accents, combined with traditional wood trim on the dashboard and doors, the Maybach will persuade you to take some very long trips. With seats that scan the vital information of passengers and make custom adjustments accordingly, and a front windscreen that is a transparent full-width display of driving and geographical data that can be controlled by the hand gestures of occupants, it is hard to imagine the competition could come up with anything remotely tempting. So have they?

Audi’s new A8 L to be released in 2017 is rumored to be a fair competitor and promises to deliver SAE Level 3 Automation Capabilities. There is even talk of Audi entering a coupe rival into this market, however, this remains to be seen.

The BMW 7 Series is technically a contender with its lightweight tastefully contoured body, smooth ride, and luxurious features. However, stalwart fans in both camps will argue the odds and in this instance, they may just be in favor of the Maybach.

Gerry Spahn, head of communications for Rolls-Royce in North America, was quoted by CarAdvice, as saying Rolls-Royce does not see the Maybach as competition to their luxury cars. He re-iterated the company’s long-time assertion that they consider their only rivals to be luxury yachts, aeroplanes, art, and real estate. Rolls-Royce feels that the Maybach may only represent competition to their second-hand cars. “It’s not about the money,” he said. He went on to explain that Rolls-Royce customers purchased their products for the exclusivity they represented.

In light of all this, it is safe to say that the Mercedes Maybach 6 has little or no immediate competition. Even if it did, there is a strong possibility that it would make no difference, to fans who can afford to own this exquisite car. “ENDS.”
